My hubby is Irish by birth and I am from the rural southern part of the US. We agreed on a boys name but girl's names are making us nuts as we both want what we think of as traditional names. (I'm part Cherokee / part hillbillie so we have lots of descriptive names in my family... and to be honest hubby is right that some of them would make great names for strippers but they sound right to me because they belong to my aunts) Since we are living in my home town I think they are ok and I have doubts about the ones he likes. We finally hit on a first name we both like... Fionna but the middle name is a sticking point due to spelling. I like Marie but he wants Maire which he says is the old spelling. By moving the "i" you change the pronounciation so that Marie sounds like Maury (well sort of I still can't wrap my tounge around it)

I want to give in to him on it and say Maire is ok but I keep thinking it sounds weird and looks weird. (Sort of like I couldn't spell or had a c-section and was on a morphine drip while filling out the birth certificate LOL) How does it look to the rest of you

Fionna Maire (pronounced Fee-Oh-Na Maw-Ree)
