ELAINE on "thinking of stopping bfeeding, need advice"

Hi, My twins are now 7 weeks old, and were in the NICU for 4.5wks. I pumped (and pumped and pumped!) for them when they were in, and at about 3 wks of age DS started to bfeed. DD has always been too small to bfeed succesfully and had to work too hard to make it worthwhile.

Since they have been home I bfeed DS 3 times a day and pump 3 times a day, so each one has breast milk 3 times. The other feeds are formula.

Although I know about all the health benefits of bfeeding and when its going well I'm enjoying it with DS, I find it all very stressful. Its great if DD stays asleep when we are bfeeding, but if she doesnt neither gets a good feed as I am trying to feed both together, keeping him latched on, and burp them.

So my options are

1. keep going and try to stay calm and sane
2. Pump exclusively and bottle feed both, which I can do much easier and faster = more sleep for me
3. stop and just use formula.

At the moment I'm producing almost 4oz each pump, if I stop gradually, and say cut out the 5am pump will I still produce 4oz at each other pumping session? is that how it works, that somehow my body knows to produce milk at the other times, but not at the 5am session?

I keep going over and over my options but not knowing how to stop and how it works is stopping me from deciding.

Or if anyone has any ideas how I can bfeed and bottle feed at the same time, without them sliding all over the place and stretching my nipple that would be great!

any ideas would be great.

thanks amanda
