I went for my first trimester screening yesterday (nuchal, quad screen blood test, etc) at 12w1d, and Baby A showed no heartbeat, and appeared to have died sometime within the last few days. Baby B had a nuchal fold of 1.3, and appeared to be thriving, the right measurement, etc.
My doctor mentioned the possibility of Baby A's placenta rupturing, which in turn could cause bleeding and cramping, and ultimately the potential miscarriage of Baby B. She said the more likely scenario is that the placenta just gets smooshed over as the healthy placenta continues to grow and take up more room, and that the Baby A would just get reabsorbed into my body.
In my last pregnancy, I had a vanishing twin, but that baby never even showed a heartbeat, and certainly there were no potential complications with a placenta. Incidentally, I lost the other baby at 9 weeks, but that had nothing to do with the vanishing twin.
So, has anyone experienced a similar late loss of a multiple? and gone on to deliver a healthy, full-term baby - as we of course, hope to do!
THanks for sharing,
